Consumer Confidence Recovers Slightly
Consumer confidence increased by 0.7 points from 48.4 to 49.1, according to the most recent data from the HPS-CivicScience Economic Sentiment Index (ESI). The reading falls just below the six-month average of 49.8 during the first half of 2015. The recovery from mid-June’s low point was driven by increases in four of the five components of the Index.
Across the five components of the ESI, consumer confidence in the U.S. economy experienced the biggest increase, jumping 1.8 points from 40.3 to 42.1. Consumer confidence in the labor market and in making major purchases also had sizable increases. The only area in which confidence decreased was the housing market, which dipped slightly from 55 to 54.6.
The three day moving average experienced a 3.7 point differential between its high point of 50.6 near the beginning and of 46.9 at the end.
The next release of the ESI will be July 14.
About the Index
The HPS-CivicScience Economic Sentiment Index (“ESI”) is a “living” index that measures U.S. adults’ expectations for the economy going forward, as well as their feelings about current conditions for major purchases. The primary goal of the Index is to accurately measure movements in overall national economic sentiment, and to provide a more sophisticated alternative to existing economic sentiment indices. Unlike other prominent indices that release consumer sentiment estimates infrequently, the HPS-CivicScience Index is updated in real time as responses are collected continuously every hour, every day. Large-scale cross-tabulation of survey responses and consumer attributes enable more granular analyses than are currently possible through prevailing measures.
